Austin in bloom: a guide to April in the city

Spring has officially sprung! April is undoubtedly a great month to enjoy everything Austin has to offer before it becomes unbearably hot in the summertime. Go ahead and get started on Spring cleaning and gardening, and we’ll handle the rest of your itinerary! Here are just a few events we’re looking forward to in April!

Visit the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center

Seeing wildflowers popping up everywhere is a sure sign of Spring in Texas. If you’re looking for a place to see wildflowers, head to the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center! It’s around 10 miles south of downtown, and the center features nearly 900 native Texas wildflowers and plants.

If you’re looking to develop more of a green thumb this Spring, the Center is offering Spring native plant sales every Friday through Sunday during the month of April. See more details Here

Run or watch the 48th Annual Statesman Capitol 10K

Still having some FOMO from the Austin Marathon back in February? Don’t worry – you’re not alone. The Capitol 10K put on by the Austin American-Statesman is back for its 48th year, and you can still register. Join the tradition and run around downtown with your fellow Austinites! If you’re not a big runner, you can still join in on the fun and watch!

Head to Zilker Park for the 97th ABC Kite Fest

We know a weekend Zilker trip (or 20, we don’t judge) is probably already on your calendar for the spring. Visit Zilker on April 5 for the nation’s largest and longest-running kite festival! With activities and kite viewing going on all day, it’s sure to be another fun Saturday in the city. Plan ahead if you’re going to the festival – there are pre-paid parking options, walking trails, or the CapMetro bus system for those attending.

Cool off in one of Austin’s many natural pools or swimming holes

The first week in April is forecasted to have an average high around 80 degrees, the sun is setting after 7:00 pm, and Barton Springs is finally open after their annual spring clean! It’s that time of year to keep a go-bag ready at all times for the pool. While Barton Springs is extremely popular, there are so many natural pools around the Austin area to check out this Spring and Summer.

Some of our favorites:

Barton Springs – Austin

  • A classic – be prepared for big crowds, especially on weekends

Deep Eddy – Austin

  • Fun fact – it’s the oldest swimming pool in Texas

McKinney Falls State Park – Austin

  • A beautiful State Park near the AUS airport

Blue Hole – Wimberly

  • A bit of a drive but definitely worth it

Conclusion

The early spring is such a beautiful time in Austin. You can see the seasons change through the blooming wildflowers in every patch of grass and buds popping out on nearly every tree. It’s also one of the few periods of the year where humidity is low. We’re sure to be taking advantage of the change in seasons here at Urbanspace, and we hope you do, too! Happy Spring!
